Using Stop Motion Animations to Activate and Analyze High School Students’ Intuitive Resources about Reaction Mechanisms

چکیده
Mechanisms are part of the high school curriculum in many countries. Although research shows that university students struggle with mechanistic reasoning, very little is known about learning mechanisms school. Understanding cognitive resources intuitively activate critical to fostering meaningful learning. A readily available tool for modeling dynamic processes stop-motion animations (SMAs). In this study, 55 were asked create SMAs their intuitive ideas nucleophilic substitution reactions. a second step, evaluated two pre-made textbook-based stepwise (SN1) and concerted (SN2) mechanisms. Within student-generated SMAs, SN1- SN2-like equally distributed; after viewing textbook-style animations, most rated an SN2 mechanism as more likely. However, no group modeled both types or reasoned possible. Students used diverse chemical concepts well plausibility reasoning. simultaneous movement atoms, conformational changes, idea competing boundary do not seem intuitive. conclusion, found be appropriate activating, analyzing, discussing students’ “on fly”, these can serve starting point promoting productive

High school students' attitudes about firearms policies.
PURPOSE To examine high school students' attitudes about firearm policies and to compare their attitudes with those of adults. METHODS The Hamilton Youth and Guns Poll is the first national survey of high school students about their attitudes concerning firearm policies. Questions were asked of 1005 sophomores, juniors, and seniors about their actual (i.e., direct) exposure (e.g., presence of...

Alcohol Pharmacology Education Partnership: Using Chemistry and Biology Concepts To Educate High School Students about Alcohol
We developed the Alcohol Pharmacology Education Partnership (APEP), a set of modules designed to integrate a topic of interest (alcohol) with concepts in chemistry and biology for high school students. Chemistry and biology teachers (n = 156) were recruited nationally to field-test APEP in a controlled study. Teachers obtained professional development either at a conference-based workshop (NSTA...
متن کاملHow to: Using Mode Analysis to Quantify, Analyze, and Interpret the Mechanisms of High-Density Collective Motion
While methods from statistical mechanics were some of the earliest analytical tools used to understand collective motion, the field has substantially expanded in scope beyond phase transitions and fluctuating order parameters. In part, this expansion is driven by the increasing variety of systems being studied, which in turn, has increased the need for innovative approaches to quantify, analyze...
